FSSAI Urged to Expedite Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling Rules

A parliamentary panel has formally urged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to finalize and notify the Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FOPNL) regulations without further delay. Lawmakers emphasized that Indian consumers require clear, simple, and accessible information regarding nutritional content, with specific focus on sugar levels in packaged food products. The directive underscores the growing urgency for standardized labeling to combat lifestyle-related health concerns across the country.

The push for these regulations follows public concern over ultra-processed food consumption in India. The FSSAI initially released the draft FOPNL norms for public consultation on September 13, 2022. Since then, the authority has received over 14,000 stakeholder comments, which are currently undergoing rigorous examination and wider consultation. The panel expressed dismay at the pace of the process, citing the time elapsed since the initial notification as a critical impediment to protecting public health interests.

The call for a time-bound notification aims to ensure that major food brands adopt transparent labeling practices that help citizens make informed dietary choices. If implemented, these labels will likely categorize products based on their health profiles, significantly altering how consumers perceive packaged goods. Industry stakeholders and health advocacy groups are now closely monitoring the FSSAI, as the forthcoming notification is expected to serve as a pivotal reform in India's national food safety framework.
