Flores Island Earthquake Death Toll Hits 53 With Thousands Displaced

A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island, Indonesia, on August 15, 2026, resulting in at least 53 confirmed deaths and over 130 injuries. Centered 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, the tremor triggered local tsunami waves reaching 1.61 meters and damaged over 1,400 homes across the Sikka, Nagekeo, Manggarai, and Ende regencies. Nearly 1,000 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial impact.

The disaster has displaced over 9,000 people and destroyed more than 167 public facilities, including schools, churches, and health centers. Recovery efforts are severely hindered by landslides that blocked the Trans-Flores highway, power outages, and communication blackouts in remote mountainous areas. President Prabowo Subianto mobilized central agencies, naval vessels, three helicopters, and over 3,500 security personnel to reach isolated villages.

The provincial government declared a 14-day emergency period to accelerate the distribution of medicine, clean water, and food. Survivors continue to stay in makeshift outdoor shelters, fearful of returning to unstable structures following the persistent seismic activity. International and domestic aid organizations are scaling up efforts as the region grapples with this severe humanitarian crisis.
