Farmers Blockaded at Shambhu Border Amid Trade Deal Protests

Thousands of farmers have gathered at the Shambhu border, separating Punjab and Haryana, as they attempt to march toward New Delhi to participate in a 'Kisan Mahapanchayat'. The protest is organized under the 'Desh Bachao Morcha' banner to express opposition against a proposed India-US trade deal. Haryana authorities have implemented strict security measures, barricading the border with cement blocks and heavy police deployment, effectively preventing the demonstrators from crossing into the state to reach the national capital.

The mobilization follows a week of intense protests in Delhi, including the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) 'Sansad Chalo' march, which demanded examination system reforms. The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory urging commuters to avoid key routes near Kisan Ghat, anticipating further congestion due to the ongoing demonstrations. As various public figures, including Diljit Dosanjh, Huma Qureshi, and Shabana Azmi, voice support for the youth and farmers, the political landscape remains highly polarized. The standoff poses a direct challenge to the administration, as the movement continues to expand its reach. Authorities face pressure to engage in dialogue, while the protest leaders maintain their stance on structural reforms and transparency.
