Ex-TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh Arrested Over RG Kar Victim's Cremation

Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator Nirmal Ghosh was arrested on Thursday in connection with the alleged forced and hasty cremation of the junior doctor, who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024. The arrest follows an investigation ordered by the Chief Minister into the events at the Nataghat crematorium, where the victim's family claimed they were intimidated and barred from following traditional customs.

The investigation highlights claims that the victim's body was cremated without proper familial authorization and that the queue at the crematorium was manipulated to prioritize her body. The complaint, filed by the victim's father, names Nirmal Ghosh and other local leaders for allegedly forcing a green corridor for transport and pressuring the family during the cremation process. The accused have historically denied these claims, asserting their actions were intended to assist the family during a period of distress.

This development occurs amid ongoing scrutiny of the state's handling of the 2024 tragedy, which has spurred significant national protests and multiple high court interventions. A special investigation team formed by the Calcutta High Court is currently reviewing the broader case, as authorities also investigate potential corruption at the medical facility. Ghosh, who is being transported to Kolkata for court proceedings, faces charges including criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.
