DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Surpasses 5,200 Cases Amid Vaccine Effort

The Democratic Republic of Congo faces its deadliest Ebola outbreak on record, recording 5,208 confirmed cases and 2,476 deaths across 54 health zones in six provinces. The World Health Organization declared the epidemic a public health emergency of international concern on May 16, 2026, after the virus began rapidly spreading through regions including Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.

The epidemic is driven by the Bundibugyo virus, which poses distinct clinical challenges compared to past outbreaks. Over 160 healthcare workers have contracted the disease, resulting in 40 fatalities, while ongoing regional insecurity and population displacement severely hinder containment operations and medical access.

The UN international vaccine coordination group is allocating 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine to combat the crisis. Public health officials continue to evaluate the vaccine's efficacy against the Bundibugyo strain while neighboring Uganda successfully concluded its own localized outbreak response.
