Dengue Fever May Pose Hidden Risks to Heart Health

Dengue fever, a common monsoon-related illness in India, can extend beyond typical symptoms like high fever and low platelet counts to affect cardiovascular health. Although rare, the virus can lead to severe conditions such as myocarditis, where the heart muscle becomes inflamed, or interfere with the heart's electrical pathways, causing unusual rhythms. Experts emphasize that the disease is a multisystemic condition that requires comprehensive monitoring, especially in severe infection cases.

The mechanism behind heart involvement often stems from either direct viral attack on the heart muscle or an overactive immune response causing inflammation. Patients experiencing symptoms such as prolonged chest pain, severe breathlessness, palpitations, or lightheadedness that do not resolve with fluid replacement should seek immediate cardiac evaluation. These signs are critical indicators, particularly when observed alongside traditional dengue symptoms in patients with shock syndrome or haemorrhagic fever.

Early diagnosis remains the most effective strategy for managing cardiac complications, as many cases of mild involvement are reversible with proper supportive care. Currently, there are no specific antiviral treatments for dengue-related myocarditis, necessitating a focus on intensive care management, maintaining adequate hydration, and monitoring heart function. Physicians advise both patients and medical practitioners to treat dengue as a complex, systemic illness, ensuring that cardiovascular health is not overlooked during the treatment process.
