Japan Earthquake Toll Rises to 30 as Heatwave Hits Kumamoto

A powerful magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck southwestern Japan's Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu island, leaving at least 30 people dead and hundreds injured. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed the updated casualty figures as search and rescue teams continued searching through collapsed structures. The shallow tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres and knocked out electrical power and water supplies to tens of thousands of homes. Japanese authorities deployed 3,600 military personnel alongside 20 aircraft to lead emergency relief operations across affected prefectures.

Severe structural destruction occurred at the Aeon shopping complex in Kashima, where a floor collapsed before a major gas blast ignited inside the building. Rescuers extracted multiple victims from the mall's debris. In nearby Yatsushiro city, a chimney and structural walls collapsed at a Nippon Paper factory, killing at least five workers. Global technology firms including TSMC, Sony, and Fujifilm evacuated staff from local manufacturing facilities. Transport networks suffered heavy disruption, with JR Kyushu suspending high-speed bullet train services and Kumamoto Airport closing its runway.

Extreme weather conditions are creating severe risks for emergency crews and thousands of displaced survivors. Over 9,000 residents sought shelter in 506 evacuation centres as daily temperatures approached 39 degrees Celsius. Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced the delivery of 300 air conditioning units to shelters to protect evacuees from heatstroke. With more than 100 aftershocks recorded since the initial quake, many families are choosing to sleep in vehicles. The disaster zone was previously hit by deadly earthquakes in April 2016.
