CPI Urges Tamil Nadu Government to Convene All-Party Cauvery Meeting

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has formally requested the Tamil Nadu government to organize an all-party meeting regarding the ongoing Cauvery water sharing dispute. CPI leader R. Mutharasan emphasized the need for a unified political stance to safeguard the state's agricultural interests. The party suggested that the Chief Minister should lead a delegation to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister and present a collective memorandum. This demand follows reports of reduced water inflows from upstream reservoirs, which have sparked concerns among farmers in the Cauvery delta region during the current cropping season.

The Cauvery issue remains a sensitive flashpoint between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, centering on the equitable distribution of river water during deficit rainfall years. Tamil Nadu frequently accuses Karnataka of failing to release the mandatory volume of water as stipulated by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The current situation is exacerbated by unpredictable monsoon patterns, which have left reservoirs at lower-than-expected levels. Political parties in Tamil Nadu argue that the lack of adequate water release is threatening the livelihood of millions of farmers who depend on the Mettur dam's supply for their crops.

The proposed all-party meeting aims to build consensus on the next legal and diplomatic steps to be taken by the state government. If the meeting proceeds, it could lead to a formal resolution being sent to the Union Government and the Supreme Court. There is also potential for increased public demonstrations and farmer protests if the water supply does not improve in the coming weeks.
