Chandipura Virus Claims 22 Lives in Gujarat Monsoon Season

The state of Gujarat has reported 22 deaths among children attributed to the Chandipura virus during the current monsoon season. Health Minister Praful Panseriya confirmed that there have been 184 suspected cases reported across the state, with 35 laboratory-confirmed positive results for the virus while 11 samples remain under analysis.

The Chandipura virus is primarily spread through the bites of sandflies, which thrive during high-humidity conditions common in the monsoon. The recent surge in child mortality has triggered a significant public health response, focusing on vector control and medical awareness to mitigate the spread of the virus in rural and peri-urban areas that are most susceptible to the infestation.

State authorities have initiated extensive surveillance and treatment protocols to contain the outbreak. The Ministry is coordinating with local health officials to ensure that pediatric care facilities are fully equipped to handle suspected cases, while simultaneously raising community awareness about environmental sanitation and vector avoidance strategies. Monitoring the progression of new suspected cases remains the most critical metric for evaluating the efficacy of the containment efforts currently underway in the affected regions.
