Centre Unveils Draft National Health Research Policy 2026 For Feedback

The Department of Health Research has officially released the Draft National Health Research Policy, 2026, inviting public feedback until July 27. This initiative represents India's first unified framework designed to integrate diverse fields including biomedical science, clinical medicine, public health, and emerging technologies. The policy aims to resolve long-standing challenges such as fragmented research efforts, regional disparities in institutional capacity, and the slow translation of scientific findings into actionable public health policies.

A central pillar of the proposal is a significant expansion of government investment in health research. The policy targets a six-fold increase in spending, aiming to reach 0.072% of GDP by 2037 and 0.15% by 2047. To ensure effective implementation, the draft proposes a robust three-tier governance structure. This hierarchy is intended to streamline decision-making and ensure that research priorities are aligned with the nation's evolving healthcare needs, particularly in the context of digital health and behavioral sciences.

By creating a cohesive national strategy, the government hopes to foster a more collaborative research ecosystem.
