Centre Reaffirms Mekedatu Dam Stand As Tamil Nadu Passes Resolution

The Union Government has reaffirmed its standing on the controversial Mekedatu dam project, maintaining its previous replies in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This reiteration comes despite strong opposition from Tamil Nadu, which views the project as a violation of existing water-sharing agreements. The Centre's stance suggests a continuation of the current federal policy regarding the proposed reservoir on the Cauvery river. In a sharp reaction to the Centre's position, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed an amended resolution opposing the Mekedatu project. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. The state government argues that any construction at Mekedatu would jeopardize the water security of farmers in the Cauvery delta region. The Advocate General recently confirmed the resolution's passage during proceedings at the Madras High Court.

The dispute has now moved further into the judicial realm, with an AIADMK whip filing a writ petition challenging the recent amendments to the assembly's resolution. The Madras High Court is currently reviewing these submissions as the legal battle over Cauvery water rights intensifies.
