Census 2027: Ladakh Begins India’s First Caste Enumeration

Ladakh is set to lead independent India’s first official caste enumeration as part of the preliminary phase of Census 2027. The population enumeration phase has been set in motion across the Union Territory and 16 snow-bound districts of Jammu and Kashmir. This early start is necessitated by the challenging geography and climatic conditions of these regions, where heavy snowfall often restricts movement during late autumn and winter.
