BharatNet Project Reaches 80% Rural Broadband Connectivity Milestone

The government's BharatNet project has achieved a significant milestone, reaching 80% completion across the country. This initiative has successfully connected over 2 lakh village councils, or gram panchayats, with high-speed broadband infrastructure, marking a major step forward in the national effort to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural India.

The project was conceived to provide the foundational digital infrastructure necessary for modern governance and economic participation. By extending broadband to the most remote village councils, the government aims to facilitate the delivery of e-governance services, online education, and digital healthcare, which were previously inaccessible to large portions of the rural population due to poor connectivity.

The Ministry of Communications has confirmed that the project remains on track to meet its revised target of 100% connectivity by the end of 2027. As the final 20% of the project is completed, the focus will shift toward ensuring the quality of service and promoting digital literacy programs to help rural citizens effectively utilize the new infrastructure for financial and economic opportunities.
