Bengaluru Metro Overcrowding Relief: BMRCL Gets ISA Nod for New Trains

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has reached a critical milestone in its efforts to ease commuter congestion with the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) granting approval for new train sets. These coaches are equipped with Distance-to-Go (DTG) signaling technology, which is essential for maintaining safe operations while increasing train frequency. The clearance follows rigorous testing of the prototypes, which were manufactured as part of a delayed contract with China’s CRRC and their Indian partner, Titagarh Rail Systems. This approval is the final technical hurdle before these trains can be deployed for commercial service.

Bengaluru's Namma Metro, particularly the Purple and Green lines, has faced severe overcrowding as daily ridership frequently surpasses 7.5 lakh passengers. The shortage of operational coaches had forced the BMRCL to operate at maximum capacity with limited headways, leading to long wait times and packed platforms at key stations like Majestic and Indiranagar. The arrival of these new coaches was delayed by several years due to logistical issues and manufacturing bottlenecks. With the ISA nod, the BMRCL can now begin integrating these six-coach train sets into the existing fleet to provide immediate relief to commuters.

The introduction of the new trains is expected to significantly reduce the time interval between consecutive services. On the busy Purple Line, frequency is projected to improve from the current five minutes to roughly three and a half minutes during peak hours. For the average Bengaluru resident, this means more comfortable journeys and reduced platform crowding. BMRCL plans to phase in the new coaches over the coming months, prioritizing the highest-traffic corridors. This development also sets the stage for the operationalization of the upcoming Yellow Line, which will also rely on similar rolling stock and signaling infrastructure.
