Baloo Gupte: Prolific Domestic Leg-Spinner Shadowed by Brother Subhash

Balkrishna Pandharinath Gupte, widely known as Baloo Gupte, established himself as a formidable domestic leg-spin and googly bowler representing Bombay, Bengal, and Railways. Across 99 first-class matches, he captured 417 wickets at an average of 24.88, featuring 26 five-wicket hauls and 5 ten-wicket hauls, alongside 255 wickets in the Ranji Trophy.

Despite his prolific domestic statistics, Gupte remained largely in the shadow of his legendary elder brother, Subhash Gupte, particularly at the international level. He played only three Test matches for India, making his debut against Pakistan in Madras during the 1960-61 series and securing a total of three Test wickets at an expensive average of 116.33.

His standout individual achievement in domestic cricket remains his phenomenal spell of 9 wickets for 55 runs for West Zone against South Zone in the 1962-63 Duleep Trophy final. Gupte passed away on July 5, 2005, leaving behind a rich legacy in Indian first-class cricket history.
