Austria Transforms Adolf Hitler’s Birthplace Into Police Station

Austria officially inaugurated a police station at the birthplace of Adolf Hitler in Braunau am Inn on July 22, 2026. This long-anticipated transformation of the 17th-century building serves to strip the site of its symbolic significance and prevent it from serving as a destination for neo-Nazi pilgrimages. The project represents a definitive state-led effort to confront the nation's traumatic history by repurposing the property for public safety and administrative utility.

The initiative, which cost approximately €20 million, follows years of complex legal and political debate regarding the site's future. The Austrian government compulsorily purchased the house in 2017 after the former owner refused to sell, eventually choosing to house the local district police headquarters and a branch of a security academy for human rights training within the premises. This dual function is intended to replace the building's dark legacy with a focus on civil order and education.

While the building's interior has been fully renovated for police use, a memorial stone outside the property will remain. The inscription, which reads, 'For freedom, democracy and liberty. Never again fascism. Millions of dead remind us,' will continue to serve as a public reminder of the atrocities associated with the site. The opening ceremony, attended by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, underscores the government's commitment to permanently neutralizing the site's potential for ideological radicalization.
