Assam Flood Crisis Intensifies; Rail Services Severely Disrupted

Heavy monsoon rainfall across Assam has pushed rivers including the Dikhow and Brahmaputra above danger levels, displacing over 3.6 lakh people. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports an official death toll of 10, with districts from Sivasagar to Tinsukia bearing the brunt of the deluge as emergency relief operations from the Army and NDRF continue.

The flooding has crippled transport networks, leading to the cancellation, diversion, or short-termination of more than 30 trains. The Simaluguri railway station yard and surrounding tracks are submerged, forcing the Northeast Frontier Railway to suspend key segments to ensure passenger safety. State officials have deployed geobags and sandbags in an urgent effort to reinforce embankments against the rising waters.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has placed the Indian Army and Air Force on standby to assist with rescue efforts as the region faces extreme flood conditions. The persistent rainfall continues to challenge flood management strategies, which experts argue require a shift from structural embankments to upstream soil conservation. With thousands still stranded, the focus remains on immediate evacuation and the mitigation of long-term agricultural and residential damage.
