Jammu and Kashmir Marks 7th Anniversary of Article 370 Abrogation

Jammu and Kashmir marked exactly seven years since the Government of India revoked the region's special autonomous status. The 2019 presidential order abrogated Article 370 and Article 35A, leading to the reorganization of the state into two Union Territories. To prevent unrest on this anniversary, the Jammu and Kashmir Police imposed strict restrictions on public gatherings. Authorities warned that no assembly would be permitted without prior official clearance, particularly as local political parties planned large-scale demonstrations.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha termed the abrogation a historic turning point for the region. During an event in Srinagar, he distributed appointment letters to family members of terror victims, emphasizing a shift toward peace and development. Conversely, the National Conference and the People's Democratic Party organized street protests to mark what they describe as a day of mourning. Opposition leaders continue to demand the restoration of statehood and special rights, arguing that the 2019 move was undemocratic and unilateral.

The anniversary observed a heavy security presence across the Kashmir Valley to maintain order and thwart potential militant activity. The abrogation has fundamentally altered the region's political and legal landscape, integrating it fully with the rest of India. While the government points to increased tourism and infrastructure projects as signs of success, political reconciliation remains a challenge.
