Apple Tests China CXMT Chips for 2027 iPhone Redesign

Apple is reportedly advancing its plans for a significant glass-centric redesign for the iPhone Pro models, targeting a launch for the device's 20th anniversary in 2027. This development counters earlier analyst speculation that the design overhaul had been canceled. The proposed design aims to modernize the aesthetic and structural integrity of the Pro lineup. Simultaneously, reports indicate that Apple has held early discussions with CXMT, China's largest chipmaker by market value. The company is evaluating CXMT's memory chips for potential use in devices sold within the Chinese market, marking a shift toward localized component sourcing.

Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has refuted claims that TSMC has approximately $1 billion in Apple processor wafers stuck in inventory due to memory shortages. Kuo emphasized that Apple's advanced planning typically accounts for memory availability months before production begins. While he acknowledged that tight memory supply is a genuine industry challenge, he argued that a billion-dollar logjam at TSMC is unlikely given Apple's meticulous supply chain management. Kuo also noted that TSMC’s 2nm technology is being utilized by multiple companies, making it difficult to attribute specific inventory levels solely to Apple’s production cycles.

The focus on high-end design and advanced components continues to influence the secondary smartphone market, particularly in India. Strong demand for Apple devices, coupled with rising prices for new models, has prevented older iPhones from seeing the typical price drops associated with new releases. This trend is exacerbated by a shortage of devices entering the refurbished market as users hold onto their phones longer.
