Apple Scrapped Powerful M-Series Extreme Chip Projects

Apple reportedly abandoned the development of its high-performance M2 Extreme and M3 Extreme processors after determining the projects were not financially viable. Designed to sit above the existing Ultra-branded silicon, these chips would have featured double the CPU and GPU core counts, targeting professional-grade tasks such as scientific computing, 3D rendering, and advanced video production. Reports indicate that these chips were intended to power a new iteration of the Mac Pro, but they were eventually shelved due to manufacturing complexities and prohibitive production costs.

Industry analysts observe that the decision to discontinue these Extreme chips was driven by a combination of high engineering costs and an anticipated limited customer base. Apple estimated that a Mac Pro equipped with an M2 Extreme chip would have carried a minimum price of $10,000, or roughly ₹9.65 lakh in the Indian market, before accounting for further hardware upgrades. These price points transformed the project into an excessively niche product, making it difficult for the company to justify the research, development, and manufacturing resources required for such an ambitious computing architecture.

The cancellation of these extreme processors contributed to a broader shift in Apple's professional desktop strategy. With the Mac Pro remaining reliant on the M2 Ultra chip until its discontinuation in early 2026, the absence of a more powerful silicon variant created a performance ceiling for the platform. This strategic pivot highlights Apple's cautious approach to high-end hardware, as the company ultimately prioritized the Mac Studio lineup over further development of the specialized Mac Pro.
