Anurag Jain Appointed as New CEO of NITI Aayog

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has officially appointed Anurag Jain, a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, as the new Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog. Currently serving as the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, Jain is set to assume the position for a two-year tenure, marking a significant transition in India’s primary policy think tank. He succeeds interim CEO Nidhi Chhibber, who took charge following the conclusion of B V R Subrahmanyam’s extended tenure earlier this year.

Jain brings extensive administrative experience to the role, having previously served as Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. His career also includes key roles within the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) between 2011 and 2015, and as secretary to the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in 2005. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, Jain has held various district-level administrative posts, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of grassroots and national-level policy formulation.

As CEO of NITI Aayog, Jain will oversee the institution’s role in steering India’s developmental agenda, monitoring government policy implementation, and fostering cooperative federalism. His appointment comes at a time when the think tank is heavily engaged in long-term strategic planning for the country’s industrial growth, infrastructure modernization, and monitoring development performance. His administrative background in both central ministries and state government is expected to facilitate seamless coordination between the Union and state administrations, ensuring that NITI Aayog remains a pivotal instrument for national economic development.
