Anthropic Launches Rupee Pricing for Claude in India as Healthcare Reforms Surface

Anthropic has officially introduced Indian Rupee pricing for its Claude AI service, marking a strategic effort to better serve its massive Indian user base. India currently represents the firm’s second-largest global market, accounting for approximately 6% of its total traffic. Subscribers can now access the Claude Pro plan for Rs 2,000 per month. This update eliminates the need for US dollar-based payments and the associated bank-levied conversion fees. However, the platform does not yet support the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), requiring users to continue using credit cards, debit cards, or app store billing systems for their transactions.

This pricing shift follows Anthropic’s aggressive expansion into India, which includes the opening of a physical office in Bengaluru and the recruitment of former Microsoft India executives. In a separate but significant national development, a parliamentary committee has proposed doubling the medical insurance coverage under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. If implemented, the cover per family will rise from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. This recommendation aims to provide enhanced financial protection for citizens requiring advanced medical care and emphasizes the need for faster cashless treatment processing. While the government currently evaluates the fiscal feasibility of this expansion, these updates—both in the tech sector and public welfare—represent major infrastructure shifts with profound impacts on the daily lives of Indian citizens.
