Amrit Bharat and Vande Bharat Sleeper See Record Occupancy

Indian Railways has reported a massive surge in demand for its newly launched services, with the Amrit Bharat train recording a staggering 173% occupancy. This peak was observed on the New Jalpaiguri-Nagercoil route, highlighting the immense pressure on North-South rail connectivity. Similarly, the country's first Vande Bharat Sleeper service has also seen a robust start. The Howrah-Kamakhya route for this premium sleeper train recorded an impressive 126% occupancy rate during the evaluation period.

The high occupancy figures validate the government's push to modernize the rail network through both affordable and premium segments. Amrit Bharat trains, designed as an economical alternative for the common man, have clearly met a critical market need for long-distance travel. On the other hand, the Vande Bharat Sleeper aims to capture the premium segment previously reliant on traditional Rajdhani services. These figures suggest that both segments are currently under-served, prompting calls for immediate fleet expansion and frequency increases across these specific routes.

While the high occupancy is a fiscal boon for Indian Railways, it also signals significant operational challenges, including overcrowding and pressure on onboard amenities. Railway officials are now assessing the feasibility of introducing additional rakes on these high-demand corridors. The success of the Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Howrah-Kamakhya route is particularly noteworthy as it marks the successful transition of the brand into the overnight travel market. Travelers can expect more such high-speed sleeper services to be announced for other metropolitan routes by late 2026.
