AI Skills Command Salary Premium Across Indian Workforce

Artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving from a niche technology to a fundamental workplace requirement in India. A recent report from the recruitment platform Naukri indicates that 77% of Indian professionals now integrate AI into their daily tasks. Tech Mahindra Chairman Anand Mahindra addressed shareholders, dismissing concerns of job displacement and instead characterizing the technology as a transformative force for the IT services sector. Enterprises are accelerating the integration of AI tools, which is driving demand for specialized human expertise rather than basic knowledge.

The transformation is evidenced by a 17-fold increase in technology job descriptions featuring AI expertise since 2020. Data shows that recruiters are specifically targeting advanced technical skills such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Azure AI, and Large Language Models (LLMs). Despite this rapid hiring demand, a significant gap remains in organizational readiness, as only 35% of professionals report receiving formal AI training from their employers. Many workers have turned to self-learning to keep pace, with 79% of surveyed professionals actively upskilling or planning to begin training soon.

Professionals possessing verified AI skills are currently commanding higher median salaries across both IT and non-IT sectors. In the IT industry, those with AI capabilities earn a median salary of Rs 13.7 lakh, compared to Rs 11.9 lakh for their peers. This premium is even more pronounced in non-IT sectors, where the salary differential is significantly higher. Organizations are increasingly prioritizing senior-level talent, with the fastest growth in AI-related hiring observed among professionals with 13 to 16 years of experience, signaling a strategic shift toward leadership capable of steering AI-driven business transformations.
