AI Skills Drive Salary Growth for Indian Professionals

Artificial intelligence is rapidly integrating into the Indian workforce, with 77 per cent of professionals now utilizing AI in their daily roles, according to the Naukri World AI Day Report 2026. The demand for specialized AI skills in technology job descriptions has surged nearly 17 times since 2020. Non-tech sectors are also showing significant adoption, with mentions of AI skills increasing six-fold over the same period, signaling a broad shift in hiring requirements across industries.

The report highlights a clear financial benefit for workers with AI expertise, who command higher median salaries compared to their peers. In the IT sector, professionals possessing AI skills earn a median salary of Rs 13.7 lakh, compared to Rs 11.9 lakh for those without. This gap is even more pronounced in non-IT roles, where the median salary for AI-skilled professionals reaches Rs 11.3 lakh against Rs 7.5 lakh for those lacking such capabilities. High-paying roles, specifically those exceeding Rs 50 lakh per annum, are increasingly prioritizing candidates with specialized AI knowledge.

Despite widespread enthusiasm, a notable disparity remains between AI adoption and employer-led training. Only 35 per cent of surveyed professionals reported receiving formal organizational training, forcing a majority to rely on self-learning or personal upskilling efforts. Recruiter demand is shifting toward advanced technical competencies, such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and Large Language Model (LLM) management. As organizations prioritize candidates capable of leading complex AI transformations, professionals with high experience levels are seeing the fastest growth in hiring demand.
