Ahmedabad Rape Case: Accused Shot in Leg While Attempting to Flee

Gujarat police shot a 23-year-old security guard in the leg after he allegedly attempted to escape custody following his arrest for a brutal rape. The suspect, who had joined his post at a residential apartment only four days prior, was accused of raping a student on the building's terrace. During the capture attempt late on August 9, a police constable also sustained a bullet injury while trying to restrain the fleeing man. A video later surfaced showing the suspect limping and repeatedly pleading for forgiveness from the authorities, stating "ek baar maaf kardo" (forgive me once).

The victim, a student living in a local Paying Guest (PG) facility, reported that the guard tied a wire around her neck to overpower her during an evening walk. Ahmedabad police initiated a swift manhunt and tracked the suspect within twenty-four hours of the incident. The shooting occurred when the accused reportedly tried to flee during a spot verification exercise conducted by the investigating team. This incident has raised severe concerns regarding the background verification processes for private security personnel hired by residential complexes and student housing facilities in major urban centers.
