Adani Power Explores Nuclear Energy Potential at Former Thermal Sites

Adani Power is evaluating its land banks in Bina and Nigrie, Madhya Pradesh, as potential sites for future nuclear power projects. The company, which acquired these locations through its takeover of Jaiprakash Associates power assets, is assessing their suitability for hosting reactors as part of a long-term expansion plan. Adani Power has set an ambitious internal target of reaching 10 gigawatt-electric (GWe) of nuclear capacity by 2035, pending regulatory and technical clarity.

This strategic shift aligns with the government's broader objective to add 100 GWe of nuclear capacity by 2047, which includes diversifying ownership to include private participation and state-owned entities. The company is currently awaiting finalized rules under the SHANTI Act before committing to specific technology partnerships. Furthermore, the government is considering repurposing aging coal-fired plants for nuclear development, with a panel already shortlisting three such sites to streamline the transition.

To expedite these developments, authorities are exploring proposals to reduce nuclear exclusion zone requirements around plant sites. Proposed changes include reducing the radius for 700 MWe reactors to 700 metres and 220 MWe reactors to 500 metres. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and the Department of Atomic Energy have already reviewed these adjustments from safety perspectives. Adani Power continues to analyze domestic and international technologies to ensure electricity remains cost-effective for Indian distribution companies, or discoms.
