Taught by Wayne Stacy, executive director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and a former U.S. Patent Office leader, the curriculum aims to build critical AI literacy while preserving core human judgment in legal practice.
The initiative addresses a shifting legal landscape where generative artificial intelligence is rapidly altering document review, legal research, and drafting workflows across the industry. Developed after consultations with more than 20 Big Law attorneys and instructional librarian Kristie Chamorro, the course focuses on Anthropic's Claude platform while remaining fundamentally platform-agnostic to prepare students for diverse professional environments.

To construct the comprehensive program, Stacy conducted extensive research into why practicing attorneys occasionally faltered when adopting generative tools, diagnosing operational missteps such as improperly configured web-searching setups or inadequate subscription tiers. Students enrolled in the three-credit offering will navigate 11 rigorous assignments scaling from fundamental prompt engineering to sophisticated multi-tool coordination. Low-complexity administrative duties fall into the AI-automated category, where failure to utilize technology risks outpricing services for clients unwilling to pay hourly billing rates for routine work.

University leadership emphasizes that artificial intelligence must not erode fundamental legal reasoning skills, which is why the course remains strictly off-limits to incoming first-year students.
