Replit Names OpenAI Primary Provider for Agent Coding Platform

Software development platform Replit has selected OpenAI over Anthropic as the primary artificial intelligence engine for its autonomous coding assistant Replit Agent. Replit CEO Amjad Masad revealed the major provider transition during the TechCrunch Disrupt conference. Executive leadership explained that prioritising OpenAI rested upon superior benchmark performance, reduced operational expenses, and a closer commercial collaboration. During his presentation, Masad stated that he believes ChatGPT currently represents a superior tool for software engineering. Internal testing and evaluation benchmarks indicated that newer models including Sol and Astra demonstrate greater efficacy when creating software applications from scratch. The loss of default placement represents a noticeable commercial blow for Anthropic, which previously counted Replit among its five largest enterprise customers. Corporate sales are driving platform expansion, with enterprise contracts growing from 2 percent of total revenue last year to 15 percent currently. Business clients now generate more than half of the company's overall revenue as Replit focuses on enterprise deployment environments.
In September 2024, Replit launched Agent 1, and following a 2025 incident where an agent deleted a database, implemented system snapshots enabling one-click restoration.
Masad outlined Replit's agent habitat of sandboxing, networking, and authorization, featuring pre-deployment security scans, supply-chain monitoring, and a one-click kill switch for enterprise customers.
Masad stated that companies adopting Replit spend 400% more within 12 months, producing a net revenue retention rate above 400% while maintaining gross-margin profitability.
