OpenAI and semiconductor engineering firm Synopsys have entered a multi-year strategic partnership to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized AI model designed to automate complex semiconductor design workflows. The collaboration aims to integrate OpenAI's frontier AI capabilities directly with Synopsys' electronic design automation (EDA) tools, allowing engineers to delegate tasks such as power, performance, and area (PPA) optimization to AI agents.

Synopsys noted that the platform currently sees involvement in over 50 customer engagements, targeting general availability by late 2026. Additionally, the broader Synopsys.ai portfolio of semiconductor design tools was initially launched in 2023.

Greg Brockman stated that advanced technology is utilized to enhance systems powering artificial intelligence. Furthermore, OpenAI previously introduced its custom AI accelerator named Jalapeño in June.

Automating Semiconductor Workflows

The GPT-Synopsys model is engineered to operate Synopsys' EDA software, interpret output data, and iteratively refine chip designs. By delegating timing and verification closure to AI agents, the companies aim to significantly reduce the time required for development cycles, which can span from initial circuit descriptions to the physical layout of billions of transistors. The service will be hosted on OpenAI infrastructure and integrated with the existing Synopsys.ai and Synopsys Autopilot platforms.

To ensure design integrity, the system maintains traditional verification guardrails. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi emphasized that the model's outputs must still pass established high-fidelity sign-off checks. Ghazi stated, "The model needs these guardrails in order to check the physics. The need for validating with the highest level of fidelity, what we call sign-off or ground truth, is essential."

Sassine Ghazi stated that the commercial agreement was structured to avoid cannibalizing existing business operations. Instead, the arrangement is expected to provide positive upside by delivering increased value to customers.

Commercial Framework and Market Impact

The partnership operates under a shared revenue framework where OpenAI will license Synopsys' EDA tools for model development. The joint offering will bundle compute resources, the model, and necessary software licenses. According to the companies, early technology engagements with leading semiconductor customers are already in progress.

Following the announcement, Synopsys raised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth outlook to 15 percent, exceeding previous analyst estimates of 11.19 percent. Synopsys shares rose as much as 7 percent in response to the news. The companies have implemented enterprise-grade security and governance controls, noting that customer data will be encrypted and will not be utilized to train the underlying AI model.

Next steps include the continued deployment of the joint service to early-access semiconductor customers, with the companies monitoring performance metrics to refine the revenue-sharing model based on measurable design improvements.
