Meta Chief Strategy Officer Dave Wehner Steps Down to Join Fireworks AI as CFO

Dave Wehner is leaving social media company Meta to become chief financial officer of artificial intelligence infrastructure startup Fireworks. Wehner initially joined Meta, then called Facebook, in 2012 and served as the enterprise's chief financial officer from 2014 to 2022. In a formal corporate statement, Meta COO Javier Olivan stated that Wehner helped guide the enterprise through growth and complexity over 14 years. The executive transition highlights a broader migration of seasoned Big Tech leadership toward fast-growing artificial intelligence infrastructure ventures. Fireworks delivers model-training services alongside cloud inference systems tailored specifically to open architectures, having achieved a $17.5 billion private valuation.
Executive Transition and Corporate Career History
The infrastructure startup reached a market valuation of $17.5 billion following a $1.505 billion Series D funding round in July 2026. The company was founded in 2022 by former Meta and Google employees to let developers customize and run open models for their businesses. Fireworks CEO Lin Qiao stated to media reporters that Wehner will be tasked with scaling the company's finances and operations. Qiao revealed that Wehner wished to re-enter a compact corporate environment where executive decisions drive tangible organizational expansion. Writing on social platform X, Wehner stated that Fireworks has the right mission for the moment and expressed conviction regarding what they are building. Former Meta Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg is an early individual investor in Fireworks, according to 36Kr. Fireworks is in early discussions to raise its next funding round at a valuation of $30 billion to $40 billion, according to AI Weekly.
Enterprise Model Infrastructure and Market Capitalization
While Fireworks remains significantly smaller than Meta, the tech giant maintains a market capitalization of about $1.56 trillion. The startup's enterprise investor syndicate is led by Atreides Management and includes major technology designers such as Nvidia alongside venture backer Sequoia Capital. The executive transition takes place as venture-backed AI companies continue attracting experienced corporate officers from established technology firms. Running foundation models for millions of users represents an ongoing operational expense, creating the commercial market Fireworks sells into.
Security Audits and Strategic Industry Context
The appointment follows recent technical challenges, including an October security incident involving unauthorized use of internal Fireworks credentials. Following an internal investigation, Fireworks stated that forensic teams detected no evidence of unauthorized access to customer models, datasets, or training data. Meta has not named an executive successor in the corporate strategy job following the leadership departure. The social networking enterprise continues expanding capital investments into proprietary data centers and computational silicon to support generative models. Neither company has publicly specified when Wehner starts his financial management duties at the AI startup. In November 2022, Susan Li took over as Meta's chief financial officer and Dave Wehner transitioned into the role of chief strategy officer, according to MLQ.ai.
