CJI Surya Kant Advocates for AI Integration in Judiciary

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has called for the integration of digitalization and artificial intelligence within the judicial system, emphasizing that such technological advancements must remain strictly anchored to constitutional values. Addressing the VII Congress of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the CJI highlighted the potential for AI to enhance accessibility, reduce case delays, and simplify complex judicial procedures.
Balancing Innovation and Constitutional Integrity
CJI Kant stressed that while courts cannot remain isolated from the rapid technological transformations affecting society, the adoption of AI must not dilute foundational principles such as dignity, equality, liberty, and fairness. He described AI as a supportive tool capable of streamlining research and managing large volumes of information, but explicitly noted that it can never replace the human acumen and decision-making required of judges.
A Collaborative Approach to Digital Justice
The CJI emphasized that the choice facing constitutional courts is not a binary one between tradition and technology. Instead, he argued that the objective should be to harness the benefits of digital transformation to make justice more transparent and inclusive, particularly for vulnerable citizens. He further highlighted the importance of cooperation among Asian constitutional courts in addressing the shared challenges posed by technological change, noting that courts have a duty to give meaning to constitutional promises even as the tools used to administer justice evolve.
