Ant Group Consolidates Alipay Operations to Accelerate Agentic Commerce Strategy

Chinese fintech giant Ant Group has consolidated its core payment and credit operations into a single business unit dedicated to Alipay, marking a strategic pivot toward what the company terms agentic commerce. The restructuring, announced in an internal letter by CEO Cyril Han Xinyi on Monday, merges the Digital Payment Business Group, the Alipay Business Group, and the Zhima Credit Business Group. Ant has appointed veteran executive Wu Minzhi to lead the newly unified Alipay Business Group while she continues her role as the company's chief people officer.
Tech platforms across China are differentiating their agentic strategies by leveraging core assets such as cloud and commerce-finance integration. This technology automates multi-step digital requests via voice or text, handling both routine lifestyle tasks and complex financial actions like mutual fund purchases.

Strategic Shift Toward Agentic Commerce

Ant Group is positioning itself for a transition from a traditional mobile payment platform to a native AI ecosystem. According to Han, the company aims to equip users with personal AI wallets and life assistants while enabling merchants to leverage Alipay's AI platform for business growth. The CEO described the current market environment as a phase of explosive, large-scale growth for agentic commerce, necessitating a more integrated approach to technology, product development, and merchant services.
This consolidation reverses a structural split implemented in late 2024, when Ant divided its payment and wallet operations into separate units. By reunifying these divisions, the company intends to streamline its ecosystem and strengthen its merchant service capabilities. The move follows a series of recent AI-focused product launches, including the interactive assistant Ah Bao, introduced in June, and a suite of AI payment tools debuted in May. These tools include an integrated AI Wallet and Token Pay, a B2B product designed specifically for AI model providers.

Building a Trusted AI Agent Ecosystem

Ant's roadmap for the coming months focuses on building a trusted AI agent ecosystem that connects multiple hardware devices. The company has been actively developing its footprint in AI payments to ensure its infrastructure can support autonomous agents capable of managing and authorizing tasks on behalf of users. As the firm accelerates its AI efforts, the new leadership structure under Wu Minzhi is tasked with executing this vision, ensuring that the platform remains competitive as it transforms into an AI-native service provider. The company has not yet provided further details on the timeline for the full integration of these new agentic features.
Conversational interfaces orchestrate tasks across thousands of adapted services rather than requiring users to navigate traditional menus and mini-apps. Meanwhile, competing firms are advancing alternative agentic roadmaps by integrating foundational models and payment systems into execution engines.
