Yubico Brings NFC Passkey Authentication to Android Users

Yubico has launched the YubiKey Passkey Enabler for Android, following a significant update to Google Play Services. This development enables seamless authentication using NFC-enabled FIDO2 security keys on devices running Android 9 and later. The tool utilizes the Android Credential Manager Provider API to allow for hardware-backed, phishing-resistant logins across various applications, enhancing security for both individual users and enterprise fleets.

Passkeys represent a fundamental shift in digital identity, moving away from traditional password-based systems that remain susceptible to credential theft. By cryptographically binding credentials to a specific website's origin, passkeys effectively neutralize phishing attempts and proxy-based attacks. Yubico’s new solution bridges the gap between high-assurance hardware security and user convenience, addressing common friction points like PIN management, antenna positioning, and simplified configuration for large-scale enterprise deployments.

IT departments can now centrally manage and deploy secure authentication workflows via Mobile Device Management (MDM) software.
