WhatsApp Web Adds Group Voice and Video Calling for Beta Users

WhatsApp is expanding its browser-based functionality by rolling out group voice and video calling to select beta testers. This update marks a significant shift for the platform, which previously limited web users to one-on-one calls, forcing them to switch to mobile devices for group interactions. The new feature supports up to 32 participants simultaneously, maintaining parity with the capabilities of the mobile and desktop versions of the service.

A waiting room option is also included to give hosts better control over call entry, while end-to-end encryption via the Signal protocol ensures that communications remain private across all participant devices.

The deployment is particularly advantageous for Linux users who lack a native desktop application for WhatsApp, as it enables them to participate in calls without needing an active phone connection.
