WhatsApp has officially initiated the rollout of a username feature, a major update designed to enhance user privacy. This functionality allows individuals to connect with others on the platform without sharing their personal mobile phone numbers. As the messaging app continues to evolve, this feature marks a departure from its traditional reliance on phone numbers as the sole identifier, bringing its capabilities in line with privacy-centric alternatives like Signal and Telegram.

Starting this week, WhatsApp users can access the new feature through their application's settings, navigating to the account or profile sections to check for availability. Although the global rollout is being conducted in phases, eligible users are already reporting the ability to reserve unique handles. These usernames are expected to be between 3 and 35 characters. WhatsApp has confirmed that the system includes safeguards, such as blocking the creation of usernames already reserved for verified organizations and public figures to mitigate impersonation risks.
