UK Police Watchdog Probes Officers Over Henry Nowak Stabbing Case

Two United Kingdom police officers face a gross misconduct investigation following their actions during the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Henry Nowak in Southampton last December. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) initiated the inquiry to determine whether the officers failed in their duty of care. Evidence suggests the officers may have breached professional standards by arresting and handcuffing the dying victim instead of providing immediate medical aid after he pleaded that he could not breathe.

The investigation stems from body-camera footage capturing the incident, where police accepted the false account of the perpetrator, Vickrum Digwa, who had claimed he was the victim of a racist attack. Digwa, who was sentenced last month to a minimum of 21 years for murder, successfully misled the officers at the scene. Public and political reaction to the footage has intensified, raising critical questions regarding institutional protocols and the treatment of potential victims who belong to specific ethnic or minority groups.

Beyond assessing the specific conduct of the two officers, the IOPC stated it is examining whether race or religion influenced any decisions made on that day. The incident has been widely leveraged by far-right commentators to allege systemic double standards in British policing. While the victim’s father, Mark Nowak, has called for public accountability and safer streets, he explicitly urged against allowing the case to trigger further social division, hatred, or sectarian tension within the community.
