Typhoon Bavi Triggers Massive Evacuations Across Asia

Typhoon Bavi is currently causing widespread disruption across Japan, Taiwan, and coastal China as of July 11. The storm, which previously reached super typhoon strength, brought gale-force winds to Japan's Okinawa prefecture on Saturday, forcing flight cancellations and power grid interruptions. While the typhoon is expected to weaken upon its approach to mainland China, it remains a high-risk weather event characterized by intense rain bands and potential for severe flooding in coastal zones.

Authorities in Taiwan have proactively moved over 14,000 residents from high-risk mountainous regions to safety, while major cities have suspended office and school operations to minimize exposure. In China, the scale of preparation is even larger, with over 600,000 people evacuated across Zhejiang and Fujian provinces in anticipation of a landfall near Wenzhou scheduled for early Sunday morning. Emergency teams exceeding 17,000 personnel are currently staged in Fujian to manage the aftermath of the expected severe weather and storm surge.

Meteorological agencies warn that rainfall totals could reach up to one meter in specific areas of Taiwan, increasing the risk of landslides and infrastructural damage. Despite the scale of the evacuations, no fatalities have been reported in Taiwan thus far, with casualties limited to minor injuries resulting from falls. As the storm moves toward the Chinese coast, regional governments remain on high alert, emphasizing that the primary objective for the next 24 hours is life safety and infrastructure stability during the expected landfall.
