Tata Altroz Testing Turbo Petrol-CNG Powertrain For Upcoming Launch

Tata Motors is currently testing a new variant of the Altroz hatchback near Pune, fueling speculation that the brand is developing a high-performance Turbo Petrol-CNG powertrain. The test mule, spotted heavily camouflaged, features a steering wheel sticker explicitly marked as CNG Only. This development follows Tata Motors' strategy of integrating its dual-cylinder i-CNG technology into various models, signaling a push to enhance the performance and drivability of its factory-fitted CNG portfolio.

Industry analysts note that the current Altroz i-CNG, powered by a naturally aspirated engine, lacks the power output of its competitors. By potentially introducing a Turbo Petrol-CNG combination similar to the setup used in the Tata Nexon, the manufacturer could significantly improve the hatchback's market appeal. The Nexon's turbocharged setup is rated at 99 bhp and 170 Nm of torque, which would offer a substantial performance upgrade over the current 72 bhp and 103 Nm available in the standard Altroz CNG model.

The timing of this move coincides with a period where the Altroz is facing stiff competition as consumer preference shifts heavily toward compact SUVs. While Tata Motors continues to expand its electric vehicle lineup, with the Safari EV expected by late 2026 or early 2027, the Altroz remains a critical part of the brand's ICE and CNG offering. An exciting, more powerful variant could provide the necessary edge to challenge rivals like the Hyundai i20 N Line.
