Odisha Families Demand Answers After Seafood Unit Tragedy in Tamil Nadu

A gas leak at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu has claimed the lives of 15 workers, 12 of whom were women from Odisha’s Keonjhar district. The disaster has devastated the remote tribal hamlet of Rangamatia, leaving families struggling with the loss of young daughters and sisters who had migrated in search of economic opportunity. Many of the deceased were minors or young adults who were the first from their households to seek employment outside their home state.

The high concentration of migrant laborers from the Keonjhar district reflects the deep-seated economic vulnerability within the region. Tribal communities in Rangamatia, classified as a particularly vulnerable tribal group, face significant barriers to education and local employment, often becoming reliant on labor contractors to find work. Families report that they were lured by promises of financial stability and better lifestyles, with some laborers misled regarding working conditions and wages.

Following the incident, the Odisha government enhanced the ex gratia payment to Rs 10 lakh for affected families and facilitated the return of 58 migrant workers from Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the Keonjhar district administration has launched an investigation to determine if the migration was voluntary or the result of a forced human trafficking network. Local officials are under pressure to establish stricter regulatory oversight for labor recruitment practices to prevent further exploitation of tribal youth in industrial sectors.
