Breakaway Catholic Society Defies Vatican, Ordains New Bishops

A breakaway ultra-conservative Catholic group, the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), has defied Pope Leo by ordaining four new bishops in Switzerland. The ritual ceremony, held in the mountain village of Ecône and streamed live to an international audience, took place despite explicit warnings from the Vatican. By proceeding without papal consent, the SSPX members involved have incurred automatic excommunication under Catholic church law, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the traditionalist society and the Vatican hierarchy.

The SSPX, founded in 1970, strictly rejects major liberalizing reforms introduced by the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), including the celebration of Mass in local languages rather than Latin. This ordination ritual marks the first major conflict between the Vatican and the SSPX since the late 1980s, when previous unauthorized ordinations led to excommunications that were later lifted by Pope Benedict in 2009. As the SSPX continues to expand its operations in the United States and other regions, the Vatican faces a potential schism.
