Somaliland Opens Embassy in Jerusalem Following Israeli Recognition

The breakaway state of Somaliland has inaugurated an embassy in West Jerusalem, a move occurring six months after Israel became the first nation to officially recognize Somaliland's independence. The mission, located within a technology park, was opened during an official visit by Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi. The event was marked by a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who highlighted the historical and spiritual ties between the two peoples, drawing parallels between the quest for sovereignty and international recognition.

The decision to site the diplomatic mission in Jerusalem—a city with a deeply contested status—has drawn immediate condemnation from the Palestinian Authority, which characterized the move as a violation of international law. Somalia, which maintains that Somaliland is a component of its territory, also issued a strong denunciation, labeling the engagement with the secessionist administration a breach of its sovereignty. The move follows months of criticism from various international actors, including China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the African Union, who have long cautioned against steps that undermine the stability of the Somali state.

For Israel, the partnership is framed as a strategic alliance in a key geographic corridor near the Red Sea, with potential for cooperation in natural resources, including oil and rare earth minerals. President Abdullahi emphasized the mutual benefits of the relationship, citing Somaliland's strategic coastline as a cornerstone of the emerging ties.
