Snap Inc. Faces Fresh Lawsuit Over Safety Features Following Minor’s Exploitation

Snap Inc. is the target of a new lawsuit filed in Missouri state court by parents of a 12-year-old girl, identified as J.F., who was allegedly exploited by a 25-year-old adult on the platform. The legal complaint, led by the Social Media Victims Law Center, argues that Snapchat’s design elements—specifically disappearing messages, location-sharing, and the Quick Add friend-recommendation engine—facilitate dangerous interactions. Plaintiffs claim the algorithm recommended the attacker as a friend, allowing the adult to use a fake Bitmoji to groom the minor over several months.

This case adds to an increasing volume of litigation against the parent company of Snapchat regarding platform safety. In May 2026, Snap settled a $8 million lawsuit with Kentucky's Breathitt County Schools over claims that addictive features harmed student mental health. Similarly, New Mexico initiated legal action in 2024 accusing the platform of fostering sextortion and unwanted contact with minors. Previous claims have also targeted the app’s perceived role in enabling drug trafficking and fentanyl distribution, citing a lack of sufficient oversight and content moderation.

These mounting legal challenges underscore a broader regulatory and public pressure campaign focused on the responsibility of social media platforms for user safety, particularly for minors. Critics maintain that Snap has consistently prioritized engagement metrics over protective infrastructure.
