Search Intensifies for 6 Missing Andhra Fishermen

A massive search and rescue mission is ongoing in the Bay of Bengal for six fishermen who remain missing after their boat capsized off the Visakhapatnam coast on July 4, 2026. The search involves Indian Coast Guard ships, Navy vessels, a Dornier aircraft, and multiple helicopters, all operating in difficult weather conditions with waves reaching four metres and winds hitting 50 knots. The vessel, which departed Visakhapatnam, reportedly suffered a mechanical failure before drifting into rough seas.

The boat’s skipper and owner, identified as Karri Chinna, was rescued by a merchant vessel, MV Universe Wealthy, after he spent nearly two hours swimming in the rough waters. He was airlifted by an Indian Navy helicopter and transported to INS Dega before being moved to KIMS Icon Hospital in Gajuwaka. Officials report he is in stable condition, though the search for his brother and other crew members, who were his relatives, remains a top priority for the administration.

The local administration and Fisheries Ministry have expressed their commitment to continuing the search until the missing individuals are located. In a separate, successful operation, 20 other fishermen were rescued from a different vessel that encountered engine trouble in the same area. The authorities are currently coordinating with Odisha Marine Police to bring those rescued safely back to port. This incident highlights the significant risks faced by local fishing communities during monsoon conditions, prompting calls for enhanced monitoring and better communication equipment on small, mechanized vessels.
