Supreme Court Orders Ram Temple Investigation Amid Wider Accountability Demands

The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Union Government, the Uttar Pradesh state administration, and the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust regarding multiple petitions seeking a CBI investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant directed the UP Government's Special Investigation Team (SIT) to file a status report in a sealed cover, including details on the investigation's progress and the team's composition. Pramod Nautiyal, a former personal assistant to the chairman of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), was arrested following evidence of misappropriating 'thali bhent' (plate offerings). CCTV footage reportedly shows Nautiyal concealing cash, gold, and silver coins while in the donation counting room. He was suspended by the committee prior to his arrest, and the Uttarakhand Police have registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for criminal breach of trust. Simultaneously, India has initiated a review of a US investigation into forced labour to protect its trade relations.
