Rajya Sabha Probe Opened Against Mallikarjun Kharge Over Anti-Modi Remarks

Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan has officially referred a privilege notice against Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to the Committee of Privileges. The complaint, moved by six BJP Members of Parliament led by Brij Lal, concerns alleged derogatory remarks made by the Congress president regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Tamil Nadu assembly election campaign. The notice contends that referring to the Prime Minister as a terrorist significantly lowers the dignity of Parliament and its members.

The dispute traces back to the Budget Session in April, when the BJP formally escalated its protest against the opposition leader’s language. Mallikarjun Kharge had defended his comments by clarifying that he intended to criticize the Prime Minister’s policies toward political opponents rather than imply literal terrorism. Despite this explanation, the BJP approached both the Election Commission of India and the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, maintaining that the choice of words was abusive and warranted formal disciplinary action.

The Committee of Privileges is now tasked with investigating the matter and submitting a report to the Chairman. This development arrives amid a broader context of intense friction between the ruling coalition and the opposition, as both parties realign organizational roles for upcoming political mobilization. The outcome of this probe could set a significant precedent for discourse standards within the upper house, further shaping the legislative environment in the coming months.
