Operation Toofan Results in Mass Drug Arrests Across Kerala

The Kerala Police's anti-narcotics initiative, Operation Toofan, resulted in the registration of 175 cases and 182 arrests in Ernakulam district over a two-day period, June 27-28, 2026. The operations targeted diverse locations including railway stations, bus stands, and commercial lodges to curb the illicit trade of substances like MDMA, cannabis, and heroin. Since its launch on June 2, the state-wide campaign has led to nearly 4,000 cases and the arrest of over 4,200 individuals.

Under the leadership of the State Nodal Officer, the operation addresses narcotics through enforcement, public awareness, and rehabilitation programs. The initiative has received high-level government support, with the Home Minister affirming a zero-tolerance policy toward drug-related criminal activity. Authorities have expanded their efforts to include the closure of illicit commercial outlets and the strict enforcement of regulations against tobacco sales, marking a comprehensive attempt to dismantle the state's drug networks.

Law enforcement officials reported that the recent weekend blitz successfully disrupted small-scale distribution and consumption networks within Kochi city and rural areas. The focus remains on both preventing substance abuse and addressing the supply side through visible, consistent police presence. With the inclusion of celebrity ambassadors to promote awareness and specialized care units, the government aims to establish this model as a sustainable framework for reducing narcotic influence within the state over the long term.
