Omar Abdullah Targets Centre With New Delhi Rally for Statehood

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced a significant shift in his government's approach to the restoration of statehood for the Union Territory. Frustrated by the lack of progress, the National Conference will hold a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on July 20, marking the beginning of a self-described new method to apply pressure on the central government. This move signals an escalation in rhetoric, as the ruling party seeks to hold the Centre accountable for earlier promises made regarding constitutional status.

The planned demonstration aims to counter allegations from opposition groups, including the People's Democratic Party, which has accused the ruling party of abandoning its campaign commitment to statehood in favor of maintaining cordial relations with the central administration. Abdullah defended his party's stance by highlighting the government's previous efforts to engage through formal channels, noting that enough time had been given for the Centre to fulfill its constitutional commitments. He further dismissed controversy regarding invitations sent to various leaders for the upcoming protest as a deliberate diversion by rivals.

The July 20 rally, coinciding with the start of the Monsoon session of Parliament, represents a direct challenge to the central government's governance model in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah has drawn comparisons with Ladakh's ongoing negotiations, where the central administration has reportedly shown more flexibility regarding local protections. The protest seeks to amplify demands for greater democratic autonomy and the restoration of statehood, asserting that the delay serves as a bait rather than a commitment.
