Odisha Voter Roll Revision Triggers Deletion Concerns

Odisha’s recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process has led to the identification of nearly 20.14 lakh names for deletion from the state's draft electoral rolls. This comprehensive exercise, which involved door-to-door enumeration, has reduced the total number of electors from 3.33 crore to 3.13 crore. The deletions primarily account for deceased voters, those who have migrated, and individuals found enrolled in multiple constituencies, representing a significant update to the state's electoral database.

The Opposition BJD has raised strong objections to the draft, pointing to the exclusion of over 10,000 voters across 75 assembly constituencies. Party leaders have criticized the deletions as stemming from minor procedural anomalies rather than legitimate inaccuracies. These concerns have prompted demands for a thorough review during the claims and objections window, which allows citizens to appeal for the inclusion of their names if they were erroneously removed during the enumeration process.

To ensure accuracy, the Chief Electoral Officer has deployed 147 electoral registration officers and 994 assistant officers, supported by senior IAS observers to oversee the appeals process. The window for submitting Form 6 to rectify these deletions remains open until September 2, with the final electoral rolls scheduled for publication on September 6. This period of intense scrutiny is intended to maintain the integrity of the voting process while addressing grievances from political stakeholders and affected individuals.
