Natur Tec India and Bayer Partner for Sustainable Seedling Cups

Natur-Tec India and Bayer have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to develop biodegradable and compostable seedling cups. This collaboration aims to replace single-use plastic nursery containers, targeting a more circular economy in the agricultural sector by ensuring cups break down naturally during transplant cycles.

The project leverages Natur-Tec’s expertise in compostable biopolymers and Bayer’s extensive crop science capabilities. The new cups are specifically engineered to maintain structural integrity during seedling growth stages, even when subjected to standard fungicides and nematicides, ensuring farmers do not face trade-offs in crop protection or germination quality.

Pilot trials are set to commence across vegetable and fruit nurseries in India to validate growth parameters and yield outcomes. If successful, both organizations intend to scale the sustainable solution domestically and eventually integrate the technology into international markets, reflecting a broader shift toward regenerative agricultural practices.
